Let's be real for a sec...

One year ago, with much toil and strain, I brought a newborn human being into the world. From that moment onward I added a new title to my identity--Mother--and though it is indeed a wondrous thing, it is still not all that I am. Yet, at times, it feels like that is all others now view me as: Eshne's mother, her caretaker, her guardian.

Not to say that the goal or occupation of motherhood is not enough for some women, it just is not enough for me. I like my privacy and moments of reflection. I like to read without a small one tearing at the pages. To shower or bathe in peace, without the howls of a toddler at the door begging to be let in. But most of all I love working on my art without the worry of small hands ruining my latest piece or pulling tools down on themselves or playing with my ink bottles.

I am not just a mother, but an artist as well, although it has been hard for many to see that this past year. Motherhood is but one facet of who I am and who I will become, for I am still learning and growing too. I still have dreams: my own studio with a little shop in the front, exhibitions all over the world, a market for my artwork, installations and collaborations. I dream of making my art practice my career and in order for me to be the best mother I can be, it is necessary that I pursue that goal to the best of my abilities.

I will not sugarcoat it, this past year has been one of the most challenging, isolating, rewarding, lonely, frustrating years of my life. Trying to keep a child entertained indoors for much of the year because the weather outside is frigid and unfriendly is not something I look forward to everyday. There are days where your child's new-found self-reliance--that developed with their mobility, be it crawling or walking--seems to vanish into a fit of whining and tears whenever you try to leave the room to accomplish some other task.

So, why do I mention all this? Because I think others forget that mothers have hopes and dreams, besides the health and success of their children. They have occupations, personalities, and goals that existed before children came along. Yes, being a mother is now a wonderful part of who I am, but it is not all I am.

Well, yesterday was my first foray into letterpress and I must say I am pleased with the results!

It has been a busy couple weeks, and until January rolls around things will only get busier!

First off, the lovely Angela of The Painted House has featured my work! It's the first time my art has been featured anywhere, and hopefully will not be the last.

These past weeks I have been busy moving studios; from one with plenty of room (but no social interaction), to another with the print collective Articulate Ink (slightly cramped quarters, but the company of friends).

After my scheduled exhibition in January at the Hague Gallery be prepared for a shift in my practice from drawing to print media. I have always had a fondness for printmaking: the ability to produce multiples, the process, and the tactile nature of the prints themselves. Drawings are beautiful in their unigueness, but (to quote The Highlander) there can be only one... if something happens to that drawing, it's lost or ruined completely.

I haven't really had any time for art as of late, a baby doesn't really allow for more than a couple hours to get creative. My solution: smaller projects, ie. japanese paper ornaments that I am putting on a mobile that will hang above the baby's crib. Genius? Not really, but it gives me a creative outlet! I've been aiming for one ornament a day, but it hasn't been an exact thing... as you can probably count. The tutorials for the ornaments can be found here and here.

Life has progressed much since this video was made... how interesting.

2010 was definitely a year of big changes: I graduated from the Bachelor of Fine Arts program with a major in Visual Arts after 4 years of toil and study, I wed the love of my life on July 1st in a ceremony and reception that were the best I have ever been to (but then again, I might be a little biased), we moved into our apartment (with neighbours upstairs who seem to pace endlessly and sound like they are dropping bowling balls on the floor every hour), and we welcomed our baby girl Eshne into the world on Christmas Eve at 9:37am. Life will never be the same, and 2011 looks to be an interesting year!

Happy 2011 to one and all! I hope that it is a prosperous and creative year for everyone.

Finally I have something to show for my absence! This, my friends, is my latest drawing. It is a lovely portrait of the Pontohi seahorse, discovered in 2003 by an Indonesian guy named Pontoh, and in reality they measure only 5-7mm! Crazy or what?! My drawing, however, is 6" by 6" which happens to be much larger than the real thing, but that's the point, I suppose. And I appologise for the picture quality, the only camera available happens to be the one attatched to my iMac...

Cathedral Arts Festival

The Visual Arts Student Association I am a part of was asked to take part in the Cathedral Arts Festival this year, with the theme focusing on sustainability. We chose to make a "quilted" banner out of bottle caps because while recycling bottles is now common practice here, the plastic bottle caps are still thrown out, filling up the landfills. The banner is 15 feet long, and has taken up way too much of my time... hopefully I can get pictures of what it looks like when it's up.

Once again I have fallen ill, nothing too serious. Just a cold that morphed into a flu than mutated into a sore throat, and never seems to go away. Unfortunately it also puts a damper on the art-making. Ugh, I absolutely loathe being ill.
The second drawing above still seems to be lacking something... suggestions?
My current inspiration is being drawn from strange marine animals that I'm not sure the name of. Maybe some sort of coral, but don't quote me on that.
Anyone know anything about Etsy? I'm interested in (perhaps) opening a shop to sell some of my useless art (ie: prints, drawings, etc), but I'm not sure how to begin.

Drinking chocolate milk by the gallon...

Sketching aimlessly and for no purpose...

Being simultaneously enthralled with and freaked out of this thing!

Black on white

It's been a rough go this week... full of mid-terms, mid-term projects, and as always a hearty dose of procrastination.
The fiancé is visiting this week, which is a nice change of pace.
I gave up coffee for Lent, which I now heartily regret due to my saddening dependence on to it to pull me through the chaos of projects... tea just does not come close. Not even the strongest of black tea compares or maybe it's just that I crave the taste?
The above black & white photographs were taken by a fellow art student for our photography class. The first taken with a high shutter speed, the second with a slower one. I've come to the conclusion that you can take a picture of almost anything in black & white film and it'll look decent.

It's supposed to be reading week, but I fell ill on tuesday and am still recovering.
I might have to get bloodwork done... I absolutely shudder at the thought of a needle drawing blood.
Yesterday the fiance and I went for sushi, which was a nice change of pace from the litres of soup and citrus I have been consuming in a feeble attempt at curing my illness.
I'm a sucker for Twilight, which we went to see yesterday, BUT somehow managed to sit beside two of the most annoying girls on this planet. Seriously, who cries when Edward sucks the poison out of Bellas blood?!

For my birthday last week I received some beautiful sanguine coloured pens and decided to take them for a test-drive...
